Level Up Classroom vs. Classcraft

The original Classcraft shut down on June 30, 2024. If you're weighing what to move to, here's an honest, feature-by-feature look at how Level Up Classroom compares — including the things Classcraft did that we don't.

Short version: they're different kinds of tool. Classcraft was a role-playing game layered over your class. Level Up Classroom is a gamified LMS — a real gradebook and classroom platform with XP, levels, and badges built in. That difference runs through the whole table below.

What we're building

The RPG rows above are honest about today. We're working toward richer, RPG-style mechanics on top of the platform. If you ran Classcraft and want to help shape what that becomes, email us — teacher input is how it gets built right.

The honest verdict

Pick the RPG feel over everything else? Then a full role-playing layer — custom avatars, a party fighting a boss, branching quests — is the thing you're after, and that specific experience isn't what Level Up Classroom is today. Be honest with yourself about how much of Classcraft's value was the game itself.

Want the motivation, but tied to real classroom work? That's where Level Up Classroom pulls clearly ahead. Classcraft never replaced your gradebook — it ran beside it. Here, the XP, levels, and badges come from the work that already exists in your class: submissions, grades, improvement, attendance. And underneath it is a full platform Classcraft never had — a real weighted gradebook, Google Classroom import, assignments, rubrics, attendance, and parent emails.

For most teachers who miss Classcraft but still have to run an actual gradebook, one tool that does both beats a game bolted onto a separate markbook. If the pure RPG mechanics are non-negotiable for you today, they're the one thing we're upfront about not having yet.
