Grade essays and handwriting with AI
Students upload a PDF or photo of their work — typed or handwritten — and Level Up Classroom's AI reads it, marks it against your rubric, and drafts feedback. You review and approve every grade before it reaches the student. Get your evenings back without giving up control.

Students upload their work
A PDF or a photo of a handwritten page — submitted right in the assignment. No special scanner or app required.
AI reads and marks it
The AI reads the submission — handwriting included — and grades it against your rubric or instructions, quoting evidence for each criterion.
You review and approve
Check the suggested mark and feedback, edit anything, and save. Nothing is ever sent to a student without your approval.
Why teachers use AI grading
Reads handwriting. Photograph a handwritten essay or test and the AI reads it natively — no typing it up first.
Marks against your rubric. It uses the levels and criteria you already built, and shows per-criterion evidence so you can trust the mark.
You stay in control. Every grade is a suggestion you review and edit. Nothing is auto-released.
Consistent feedback. Every student gets specific, criterion-based feedback — not just a number — even on a big class set.
Canadian data residency. Files are stored in the Toronto region, and students can opt out of AI features.
Built into your gradebook. Approved marks flow straight into the Level Up Classroom gradebook and student portal.
AI grading questions
Can AI grade handwritten student work?
Yes. Students photograph or scan their handwritten work and upload it. The AI reads handwriting directly, grades it against your rubric or instructions, and suggests a mark and feedback for you to review.
Does the AI send grades to students automatically?
No. AI grading is a suggestion only. You review the proposed mark, rubric evidence, and feedback, edit anything, then save. A grade is never released without your approval.
How accurate is AI grading?
It's a first-pass assistant, not a replacement for your judgment. It marks against the rubric you provide and quotes evidence for each criterion, so you can verify and adjust quickly. Because you approve every grade, accuracy stays in your hands.
Is it private and compliant?
Uploaded files are stored with Canadian data residency (Firebase, Toronto), students can opt out, and the grading uses Claude AI (Anthropic), disclosed in the privacy policy.
