Honest comparison
Level Up Classroom vs Aspen MarkBook
Aspen MarkBook is the Ontario gradebook many of us grew up teaching with. It works, but it's two decades old in places. Level Up Classroom is the modern alternative — designed for KATC, .arc round-trip, and the realities of teaching in 2026.
TL;DR — when to pick each
- ✓Pick Aspen MarkBook if your board mandates it. Many do — and if that's the case, the choice is made for you.
- ✓Pick Level Up Classroom if you have flexibility on your gradebook. You get a modern UI, AI report comments, gamification, and full .arc export round-trip back to Aspen at submission time.
- ✓Use both together if you must submit through Aspen but want a better daily-use tool. Track grades in LUC throughout the term, then export the .arc file at report card time and upload it to Aspen MarkBook in one shot.

Where Aspen MarkBook wins
Integration with the Aspen SIS, end-of-term. If your board runs Aspen for student records, attendance, schedules, and report card submission, MarkBook talks to all of that natively. There's no exporting, no uploading, no risk of mismatched OIDs.
It's also been around long enough that every teacher in your school probably knows where to click. There's no learning curve.
Where Level Up Classroom adds the missing parts
Aspen MarkBook is functional but feels its age. The interface hasn't changed meaningfully in years. Daily workflow is slow — entering grades, swapping between students, generating report comments. Mobile is barely usable. There's no gamification, no AI assistance, no live student-facing portal that actually feels modern.
Level Up Classroom was built specifically for teachers who use MarkBook (or have used it) and want something better for daily use. KATC works out of the box. Learning skills are first-class. Mark sets are reusable across courses. The .arc export is full round-trip — your Hub AVG mark gets written to col 8 of the .arc file with the original Aspen OID preserved verbatim, so it imports cleanly when you submit at report card time.
On top of that you get AI-generated report card comments (saves real hours at submission time), AI rubric and lesson generation, optional gamification for student engagement, a real student portal that students actually want to use, and one-click parent emails with the student's live grade pre-filled.
The .arc round-trip workflow
If your board still requires Aspen submission, the workflow is straightforward:
- At the start of the term, export your roster from Aspen as a .arc file.
- Import it into Level Up Classroom — the OEN, course code, semester, and Aspen Schedule ID for each student all come across verbatim.
- Use LUC for all your daily gradebook work, attendance, communication, and (if you want) gamification.
- At report card time, generate AI comments in seconds, finalize each student's Hub AVG mark, and export back to .arc.
- Upload the .arc file to Aspen MarkBook for submission. The OID round-trip means Aspen recognizes every student.
